From her cotton-picking days as a young girl to her cattle-tending years as an adult, Mattie Lou was a strong, compassionate daughter of God who sought only to serve her Lord. A teacher at heart, Mattie Lou graduated from Asheville Normal Teachers College (now part of Warren Wilson College). During the course of her long teaching career, she taught kindergartners through college students in the mountains of North and South Carolina. She cherished her students and they loved her, especially those she taught in the public schools of Rutherford County. Mattie Lou helped pioneer the public kindergarten program, precursor to the Head Start program, in Western North Carolina and was active in her teaching sorority, Kappa Kappa lota.

Her years of service included working with inner-city children at the Wesley House in Louisville, teaching classes and offering chaplaincy services at Spartanburg Methodist College and serving as director of Christian education at First United Methodist Church in Forest City. For Mattie Lou, serving others was a privilege.

She spent her life looking for opportunities to serve. She gave generously of her resources to people in need and cared selflessly for her family, neighbors and friends. Though she had no biological children of her own, Mattie Lou was a mother to hundreds through her church work, school teaching and nurturing of her family. God's love flowed freely through Mattie Lou. She saw only the good in others, she spread joy and faith wherever she went.
