CARLSBAD — Helen L. Herzog, 88, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, inCarlsbad.

Born May 12, 1912, in Kansas City, Mo., she lived in Carlsbad for30 years.

Mrs. Herzog was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Herzog,on Oct. 22, 1997. She is survived by her niece, Linda McComb of SanClemente; nephew David Ward of Fullerton; and brother andsister-in-law Stephen and Janice Ward of Placentia.

A private cremation is planned and inurnment will take place at 11a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

FALLBROOK — Jean Robbins Ball, 83, diedSunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Fallbrook.

Born Dec. 9, 1917, in Denver, she lived in Fallbrook for 23 years.She was a homemaker for 61 years, an auxiliary volunteer with theFallbrook District Hospital and a member of the Angel Society ofFallbrook.

Mrs. Ball is survived by her husband of 61 years, William C. Ballof Fallbrook; daughter Suzanne Williamson of Thousand Oaks; twograndchildren; and one great-grandchild.

ESCONDIDO — Marguerite Swerdfeger, 83,died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in Escondido.

Born Nov. 22, 1917, in Harrisonville, Mo., she lived in ImperialCounty most of her life and moved to Escondido in 1997. Shegraduated from Central Union High School in El Centro and worked aschief probation officer of Imperial County before retiring in1973.

Mrs. Swerdfeger was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer A.Swerdfeger Jr., on Oct. 23, 1971. She is survived by her son anddaughter-in-law, Wilmer Allen III and Nancie Swerdfeger ofBakersfield; daughters and son-in-law Marigene Roberts of El Cajonand Julie Ann and Mike Burton of Valley Center; brother andsister-in-law Joe and Jeanette Hurst of Oceanside; sisters andbrothers-in-law Bernice and Joe Qualls of Apple Valley and Barbaraand Ed Blackman of El Centro and Fort Collins, Colo.; 13grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Born Nov. 24, 1942, in Fall River, Mass., he lived in RanchoBernardo for 16 years. He was a procurement specialist at GeneralDynamics.

Mr. Pelletier is survived by his wife of 36 years, Paula Pelletierof Rancho Bernardo; son Paul Pelletier of Tierrasanta; daughtersRenee Tactay of Escondido, Katherine Pelletier of Rancho Bernardoand Karen Pelletier of Encinitas; sister Jackie Pelletier ofBuellton; and three grandchildren.

Born Oct. 22, 1912, in Cordell, Okla., she lived in Vista for 37years. She was a special education teacher for the Vista UnifiedSchool District for 20 years and was a member of PEO, the Communityof Christian Family Ministry and had been a member of All SaintsEpiscopal Church in Vista.

Ms. Lane is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at allSaints Episcopal Church in Vista, with the Revs. Richard Bowman andDennis Kelly officiating. A private cremation is planned, withburial to take place at Episcopal Church Conference CenterColumbarium in Oakhurst.

SOLANA BEACH — Philip Pavelko, 81, diedFriday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Scripps Memorial Encinitas.

Born April 30, 1919, in Puyallup, Wash., he lived in Solana Beach.He was a home builder before retiring and served in the U.S. Armyduring World War II. He was a charter member of Elks Lodge inOregon.

Mr. Pavelko is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorcas Pavelko ofSolana Beach; brother Charles Pavelko of Del Mar; and many niecesand nephews.

His cremains will be scattered at sea.

Jose Rocha, 80

CARLSBAD — Jose J. Rocha, 80, diedSunday, Jan. 7, 2001.

Born Nov. 11, 1920, in Washington, D.C., he lived in Carlsbad for16 years. He attended Catholic University and South EasternUniversity in Washington, D.C., and served in the U.S. NavyIntelligence Service during World War II. He specialized ininertial guidance systems for military and civilian use working asstaff engineer for North American Aviation Corp. in Los Angeles andas an executive with A.C. Electronics in Goleta, where he retiredin 1972. He was a key contributor to the first inertial guidancesystem used in commercial Boeing 747s. He worked as a broker,property appraiser and business owner in the Santa Barbara area. Hewas a woodworker and earned a pilot’s license.

Mr. Rocha is survived by his wife, Dorothy Shaw; sons Ronald Rochaof Swampscott, Mass., and Gil Rocha of Portland, Ore.; daughtersNatalie Hebbron of Shingle Springs, Julia Hoyt of Santa Barbara,Maria Simpson of Phoenix; and sister Gloria Lojacono of LagunaNiguel.

Esther Schupbach, 95

ESCONDIDO — Esther Corey Schupbach, 95,died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001.

Born Oct. 21, 1905, in Salinas, she lived in Salinas until she was5 and has lived in Escondido since 1986. She attended GreggDistrict School, a one-room school in Yuma, Ariz., and graduatedfrom Yuma High School. She attended San Diego State.

Mrs. Schupbach was preceded in death by her son, William C. Lewis,in May 2000. She is survived by her sons, Robert J. Lewis ofEscondido and Barry W. Schupbach of Arcadia; grandchildren Stephenand Michael Lewis of Escondido, Erica Lewis of Livermore, JacklynnCox of Orem, Utah, Carrie Sheppard of Citrus Heights, Lynne Holtonof Apple Valley, Nicholas and Matthew Schupbach of Arcadia; andnine great-grandchildren.

Donald Truman

ESCONDIDO — Donald William Truman diedSaturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Escondido.

He was born in Iowa and served as a master sergeant in the U.S.Marine Corps during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force duringthe Korean War. He graduated from UC Berkeley and worked as amicrobiologist for Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, LaJolla, for 26 years.

Mr. Truman is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cathleen Truman ofEscondido; daughters Lori Truman of Escondido and Aimee Grabau ofTemecula; and three grandchildren.

A private cremation is planned with a memorial service to be heldat a later date in Iowa.

Rodney Dunn, 9

CAMP PENDLETON — Rodney “Loy” Dunn III,9, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, in Chino.

Born April 8, 1991, in Bethesda, Md., he lived in Camp Pendletonfor seven years. He attended school in Fallbrook and National Cityand Stuart Mesa Elementary in Oceanside. He enjoyed family outings,bus rides, school, playing and being close to his twin brother.

Rodney “Loy” was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kent Whyte;and uncle Erik Whyte. He is survived by his mother and father, Katyand Staff Sergeant Rodney Dunn II of Camp Pendleton; twin brotherLukas K. Dunn of Camp Pendleton; grandparents Joanne Whyte ofGoldfield, Iowa, Rod and Monorae Dunn of Clarkston, Mich., Jamesand Janet Wiegert of Davisburg, Mich.; great-grandparents Haywordand Betty Dunn, Pat and Gay Tinson, Gerald and Pauline St.. Born March 25, 1960, in Phoenix, she lived in Carlsbad for fiveyears. She was a jewelry designer and owner of Gizmo’sCreations.

Born Oct. 25, 1926, in Cape Cod, Mass., she lived in Oceanside for45 years. She worked for the civil service as a payroll clerk forthe Navy at U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, before retiringin 1984. She was a homemaker for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Adams is survived by her husband, Patrick Henry Adams ofOceanside; and son Patrick Ronald Adams of Oceanside.

Born Aug. 10, 1927, in Seattle, she lived in Encinitas for 25years. She was a homemaker and a volunteer for Casa de Los Pobresand Meals on Wheels. She was a writer and music composer and amember of the Catholic Church.

Mrs. Knowles is survived by her husband of 53 years, William R.Knowles Sr. of Encinitas; and sons and daughters-in-law Rick andJoan Knowles of Cardiff, T.J. and Diann Knowles of San Diego,Jeffrey and Tara Knowles of Laguna Hills and Rob and Kristi Knowlesof Los Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Hollis McMilan ofPortland, Ore.

Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Sheridan, Ark., he lived in Ramona for 41years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1957, when he wasdischarged as a chief radioman. He served as an electronicstechnician for the FBI for 18 years and was a member of ImmaculateHeart of Mary Catholic Church, serving as Eucharistic minister. Hewas a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyedwoodcarving.

Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Betty J.Hayes of Ramona; sons Patrick Hayes of Redondo Beach, Matthew Hayesof Ramona and Talbot Hayes of Campo; daughters Frances Nystrom ofPoint Loma, Margaret Hayes of Ramona and Elizabeth George of SanFrancisco; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Born March 11, 1947, in Fort Collins, Colo., he lived in Escondidofor 26 years. He was a marketing and public relations director forPalomar-Pomerado Health System for four years and was executivedirector of the San Diego County Farm Bureau for five years. He wasa reporter and news anchor at KNSD-TV Channel 39 in San Diego for16 years and served as 2nd lieutenant in the National Guard.

Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his wife, Cyndy Lynn Owen, onDec. 23, 2000. He is survived by his father, Thomas E. Owen Jr. ofRaton, N.M.; son Mike Owen of Escondido; brother Robert D. Owen ofHuntington Beach; half-brother Timothy Owen of Denver; and sisterLinda E. Shu of Berkeley.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Thelma Williams of Las Vegas;sons Dennis Williams, Terry Williams, Willie Williams Jr., andEddie Williams, all of Oceanside; daughters Velma Williams, BenitaWilliams and Paulette Williams, all of Oceanside; 19 grandchildren;and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Schallock was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Schallock, in1997. He is survived by his son, Larry Schallock of Oceanside;daughter Eleanor Kay Prestidge of El Cajon; sister Irene Kuhlman ofOceanside; grandchildren Lisa Rios and Henry Campo; andgreat-grandchildren Henry Jr. and Danny Rios.

Mrs. Grout was preceded in death by five sister and four brothers.She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Russell T. Grout ofEscondido; sister Josephine Cottrill of Clarksburg, W.Va.; sevennieces; and 10 nephews.

Mrs. Scheel was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Kiernan,in 1965. She is survived by her daughter, Dee Lamon of Carlsbad;sister and brother-in-law Geraldine and Troy Cato of Covina;grandchildren Joni and Michael Gray of Fallbrook;great-grandchildren Cory, Dakota and Logan; nieces Georgia CarolCaloudes and Jeannine Walters; nephew Terry Hollinc; and grandnephew Nicholas Deville.

EUGENE, Ore. — Patsy Ann Bowman, 65,died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, in Vista.

Born June 5, 1935, in Corman, Texas, she lived in Eugene for twoyears and previously lived in Vista for 58 years. She was ahomemaker.

Mrs. Bowman is survived by her husband, John A. Bowman Jr. ofEugene; sons John M. Bowman and David Bowman, both of Vista, andPaul Bowman of Boise, Idaho; daughters Teresa Moser of San Marcosand Barbara Holmes of Coppel, Texas; brothers Andrew JacksonStuckey of Lockhart, Texas, and Harold Stuckey of Vista; sisterEvelyn Marinaro of Nashville, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and twogreat-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at BuenaVista Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Kleinschmidtofficiating. A graveside service will take place at 10:30 a.m.Monday, Jan. 15, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Burial willfollow.

Joseph Schneider, 79

OCEANSIDE — Joseph A. Schneider, 75,died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Oceanside.

Born Jan. 10, 1926, in North Dakota, he lived in Oceanside for 23years. He was a real estate agent before retiring and served in theMerchant Marines during World War II. He was a member of theKnights of Columbus.

Mr. Schnieder is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Schneiderof Oceanside; sons James Schneider of Lubbock, Texas, and DonaldSchneider of Oceanside; daughters Rae Carol Couzens of Diamond Barand Frances Hottinger of Dover, Ark.; brothers Ralph Schneider ofLancaster and Claude Schneider of San Bernardino; 10 grandchildren;and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, atMission San Luis Rey Parish Chapel. Inurnment will take place at alater date at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

Geralda Arasim, 82

SUN CITY — Geralda Lucille Arasim, 82,died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Ember Care in Perris.

Born March 10, 1918, in Rhode Island, she lived in Sun City for 20years. She was a self-employed tour organizer at The Farm inWildomar for 10 years. She was a member of St. Francis of RomeCatholic Church in Wildomar, serving in the Altar Society, avolunteer cook for the poor at Fishes and Loaves and worked for St.Vincent de Paul Society in Wildomar. She enjoyed making ceramicgifts and was a member of the Ceramic Club at The Farm.

Mrs. Arasim is survived by her son, Edward Arasim of Menifee;daughter Maureen Herran of San Jose; sister Francis Boudreau ofFall River, Mass.; brother Jerry Lopriore of Fall River; fivegrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A rosary was recited Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Miller-Jones Mortuary.A funeral service will be held at noon today, Jan. 18, at St.Frances of Roma Catholic church. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. atRiverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 3.

Robert Boivin, 66

SUN CITY — Robert Laurent Boivin, 66,died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Loma Linda University MedicalCenter.

Born Nov. 26, 1934, in Montreal, Canada, he lived in Sun City for10 years. He was a warehouseman for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. inLos Angeles for 26 years. He enjoyed playing hockey and iceskating, woodworking, painting and camping with his family. Heworked for the Sun City Senior Center for many years.

Mr. Boivin is survived by his wife, Donna Boivin of Menifee Valley;daughters Cindy Boivin of Fullerton and Cathy Clarke of Corona;sons Greg Boivin of Costa Mesa and Jerry Boivin of Durango, Colo.;sister Doris Anglehart of Montreal, Lorraine Gilles of Sun City andPauline McPhee of Boise, Idaho; brothers Gerald Boivin of Montrealand Ronald Boivin of Boise, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, atMiller-Jones Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m.Saturday, Jan. 20, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. Burialwill take place at Menifee Valley Memorial Park in Sun City.

Born May 31, 1925, in Mexico, he lived in Menifee Valley for twoyears. He was a maintenance worker for the government of Mexico for25 years.

Mr. Sanchez is survived by his wife, Angelina Sanchez ofMontclaire; daughters Leyva Adela of Los Angeles, Marisela Sanchezof Uruapan, Mexico, and Yolanda Sanchez of Santa Rosa; sons AntonioSanchez of Menifee Valley, Efrain Sanchez of Perris, Jose Sanchezand Petronilo Sanchez, both of Uruapan, Manuel Sanchez of LosAngeles and Rogelio Sanchez of St. George, Utah; 39 grandchildren;and 39 great-grandchildren.
